1. Avoid Flying at Peak Times
If your travel schedule is flexible, avoid flying on the busiest days of the season: the day before Thanksgiving and the two days immediately preceding and following Christmas and New Year's. 2. Hit the Road With Technology by Your Side
Portable GPS navigators are wondrous things, providing the fastest and most direct routes to your destination — and voice auto-commands help keep your eyes on the road. Upgraded models offer real-time traffic information, but unless your car has built-in GPS capability, these can be pricey. A much more economical alternative — as infree — is Google Maps, available on most smartphones. 3. Travel Light

How To Apply China Travel Visa For Business Purpose?

No doubt about it, China is one of the really hot places for business travel these days. But before you go, you need to make sure you have the right documents. In addition to a passport, business travelers will need a visa for a trip to mainland China.

The whole application process may take about a week, and that's not including the time required to hear back on your application. For an extra fee, you can select same day or rush services.

Note: you do not need a visa for trips to Hong Kong of durations under thirty days. For business travelers going to Hong Kong, it may be possible to apply for a visa there. Simply ask your hotel concierge for assistance. Alternatively, if you're in Hong Kong to conduct business, you may want to follow these directions to obtain a visa for Hong Kong.

Overview
Business travelers to China usually obtain an "F"-type visa. F visas are issued to travelers who are visiting China for business reasons, such as lectures, trade shows, short-term studies, internships, or general business, technological, or cultural exchanges.

You'll need to decide what version of the Visa you’re applying for: single entry (valid for 3-6 months), double entry (valid for 6 months), or multiple entry (valid for 6 months or 12 months). The multiple entry F visa is value for 24 months, but requires additional documentation (such as documents proving that that you investments in China or are collaborating with a Chinese company, etc.)

Complete the Paperwork
The place to start is by making sure you have a valid U.S. passport with at least six months remaining on it, and one blank visa page.

The first step in applying for obtaining a visa for a visit to mainland China is to download the visa application from the Chinese Embassy website. Once you've downloaded it, you'll need to fill it out. Make sure to select the correct type of visa you're applying for. Most business travelers will want to apply for a business visa (choice F). Business Visas (an F Visa) are issue for travelers who will be staying in China less than six months, and are visiting for investigation, lectures, business, short-term advanced studies, internships, or business, scientific-technological, and cultural exchanges.

You'll also need to attach one passport photo (2 by 2 inch, black and white is acceptable) to the application, and submit a copy of your hotel and flight (round trip) information as well. You will also need to include an invitation letter from an authorized Chinese business, or a letter of introduction from your U.S.-based company.

Lastly, you'll want to include a self-addressed, prepaid envelope so the Chinese Consulate can return the materials to you.

Business travelers going back and forth between China and Hong Kong should be sure to select the "double entry" option on the application.

Costs
Application fees can be paid by credit card, money order, cashier's check, or company check.

Visa application fees start at $130 for United States citizens.

Express processing service (2-3 days) costs $20 extra.
Same day processing service is $30 extra

Submitting the Paperwork
Visa applications must be submitted in person. Mailed applications are not accepted.

Once you have all your materials assembled (visa application, passport photo, copy of hotel and flight information, invitation letter, and self-addressed, prepaid envelope), you should deliver them to the nearest Chinese Consulate.

If you can't make it to a Chinese Consulate in person, you can hire an authorized agent to do it for you. You can also ask a travel agent for assistance.

Obtaining the Visa
Once your materials are submitted, all you have to do is wait. Processing times vary, so it's best to leave plenty of time before your trip for obtaining the visa. Regular processing time is 4 days. Rush (2-3 days) and same day service is available for an extra fee.

When to Fly for Christmas

If you can fly before Dec. 17, chances are you will save money.

An old tip but a good one: the cheapest days to fly are typically Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays and as you will see, these are frequently the days with the cheapest airline surcharges.

Try to fly early in the day, or in the evening or an overnight “redeye” flight – when people generally don’t want to fly because that’s when it’s cheap to fly.

3.) Don’t Insist on Nonstop

Sometimes a nonstop flight will be cheaper, but more often a connecting flight will save you money. It’s up to you to decide if the inconvenience is worth it.

4.) Ship Gifts, Avoid Overweight Luggage

1. “It’s one thing if a pilot puts the seat belt sign on for the passengers. But if he tells the flight attendants to sit down, you’d better listen. That means there’s some serious turbulence ahead.”

Accommodation is one of the biggest fixed costs travelers have and people are constantly looking for the best value they can find. I’m sure many backpackers would sleep in a barn if it was the cheapest accommodation around; some people will stay anywhere, as long as it has a roof. Some just want cheap hotels. Others want luxury. Everyone has a different preference.

However, no matter what your accommodation tastes may be, one thing everyone has in common is that no one wants to pay a fortune for it. In fact, one of the best ways to take a cheap holiday is to cut down on accommodation costs. Since you have to stay somewhere every night, reducing this expense can save you a lot of money of the total cost of your trip. Next to finding a cheap flight, finding free or inexpensive lodging will have the biggest impact on your travel budget.

Luckily, there are a number of ways travelers can find a decent place to stay without forking over their entire vacation fund:

Couchsurfing
One of the best ways to get free accommodation is by staying with someone who lives where you’re going. Couchsurfing connects travelers with people in various cities that offer a free place to stay. Sometimes it’s a bed, sometimes it’s a couch, sometimes it’s literally just space. The goal of the site is to help travelers not only save money on accommodation but also learn about the local culture but being able to stay and interact with a local.

I use this site all the time, and I think it’s one of the greatest things to happen in travel. While I love the fact I can get out of hostels and hotels and save money, what draws me to the site over and over again is that I get to see the local side of a city. I get taken to parties, and restaurants, and sites that aren’t in any guidebook.

A lot of times, people are scared to couchsurf because they wonder if it’s safe. I was nervous about it at first, too. There you are, in a new city, with all your stuff — in a stranger’s home. What if they try to murder you in your sleep? What if they steal your stuff? However, I’ve found that people who are willing to open their homes to strangers tend to be very open-minded people, and are also usually former travelers. They know what you are going through. They want to help. Moreover, Couchsurfing is aware of this and take many steps to provide security. It offers various levels of verification and allow users to rate and leave comments on people’s profiles.

When I am looking for a Couchsurfing host, I use the following criteria:

• There has to be a picture with the profile. This just shows me that it’s a real person.

• The profile has to be filled out. It shows they are interested and involved. Most people aren’t going to spend the time to fill this out if they aren’t going to be comfortable with strangers in their home. If someone hasn’t bothered to fill out the profile, they probably don’t use the site and I simply move on.

• They should have reviews. If other people have stayed with or have at least traveled with the host and had a good experience, you and your stuff will probably be fine. You might not get along with the host but at least you know they aren’t a creep. The more positive reviews, the better.

• Verification helps. Couchsurfing offers different levels of verification. People can be verified by other travelers, with a mailing address, or with a credit card. Knowing that a person has been verified reduces the likelihood that they are going to be a crazy psycho killer. However, if someone isn’t verified but has a lot of reviews, that’s O.K. with me.

No matter what, you need to use your own judgment but I haven’t heard of any really bad couchsurfing experiences, besides the host being a jerk or a little anti-social. Usually, you end up talking with hosts over e-mail to get a feel for them and what they expect. If it doesn’t seem right, don’t do it! But once you couchsurf for the first time, you see that it really isn’t that bad. If you do it frequently, you’ll end up saving hundreds upon hundreds of dollars on accommodation and making friends around the world.

There are other sites that do the same thing — Global Freeloaders, Hospitality Club, and Stay4Free that you can also try out. They are all essentially the same thing, Couchsurfing is just the most popular.

Hostels
Hostels are another option for budget travelers. In hostels, rooms are dormitory-style with all the facilities shared. Many people think of hostels as a “young thing” and are not interested in sleeping in a dormitory. Yet people do not often realize that many hostels offer small rooms, singles, and doubles designed for solo travelers or couples. I have met people in hostels in their 50s and 60s. The myth they are dirty, gross places to stay designed for young people is wrong. Many hostels offer more amenities than hotels, the new ones are really clean, and as young people expect more comfort, hostels are cleaning up their ways. These aren’t the hostels you see in movies.

I think hostel dorms are the best value for budget travelers. The bigger the room, the cheaper the cost. Yes, you have to share a room with a lot of people, but if you are on a budget, it is your best way to save money. If you are traveling in a group, you could get one of the dorms for your entire group and not have to share with strangers.

While manu hostels are geared toward young travelers, and set age limits, some of the bigger international chains such as YHA and Hostelling International focus more on older or group travelers. But I’ve seen families, tour groups, and older travelers in hostels all over the world. A hostel is really for anyone who wants to meet other travelers, regardless of age.

Hostels are safe, secure, and cheap. Don’t overlook them — even if you’re not part of the young backpacker set. To book hostels online with no booking fees, go to Hostel Bookers. I tend to use them the most, simply because I’ve interacted with people from the company and they were nice and friendly. Moreover, unlike other hostel booking companies, they don’t have a booking fee.

Home Exchange
Another good way to get cheap accommodation is a home exchange program. This probably works best for older travelers who already own a home. These programs have been around for a long time but are growing in popularity due to good marketing and word-of-mouth on the Internet. Home exchanges are just like they sound — for a set amount of time, you swap homes with a family from another country. It’s a great way to live cheaply abroad.

Most people don’t do this because they worry about security — but remember that the other family is trusting you with their home, too. Sites that facilitate home exchanges usually have various levels of verification and security similar to Couchsurfing. Families talk to each other over phone and e-mail, and there’s no commitment if you find that it’s not right for you. Most people who do this are like-minded, so the chances of something going wrong are slim. Moreover, the family sends a few people to check up on you when you arrive. You can get all the comforts of home (hot water, laundry, etc.) while in another city, without paying for it.

Short Term Rentals
Similar to home exchanges, rentals allow people to stay in furnished apartments while away. These apartments can sometimes be cheaper than hotels and provide many more amenities. They are great if you plan to spend a week or more in one place. You’ll get all the comforts of home without spending a fortune.

You can find a lot of rentals in Europe and Australia, where apartments tend to be rented on a week-by-week basis. If you are in a city long term, this is a better option than a long-term hostel stay. To find apartments to rent, check out sites like Craigslist, or Google “short term apartment rentals” or a similar phrase.

Another option, especially for older travelers, are timeshare rentals. Timeshares are a great rental option because you’ll receive the same comforts as you would in a regular apartment rental — like washers and dryers, kitchens, spacious living rooms and multiple bedrooms. You’ll find that most of the rentals online are offered at prices lower than or similar to most hotels and resorts.

So next time you head out on the road, consider these options when thinking about accommodation. Get out of the hotel mindset! Drehrestaurant Allalin: Saas-Fee, Switzerland

The world's highest revolving restaurant is on top of a glacier 11,000 feet above sea level, reached by a remarkable alpine subway. A dozen of the highest peaks in the Swiss Alps slowly swirl by as diners warm up with hearty Swiss-German fare like kalbsbratwurst (veal sausage) with hash-brown-like rösti ($32), and Älplermakkaroni: macaroni in a creamy cheese sauce with ham, bacon, potatoes, and stewed apples ($32). If you're still frostbitten, a glass of mulled glühwein wine ($9) should do the trick.

Restaurant 181: Munich

Chef Otto Koch's acclaimed restaurant inside the Olympic Tower was recently awarded its first Michelin star. Named for its placement 181 meters above ground, the restaurant has three airplane-esque options. In 181 First, the opulent eight-course tasting menu ($209) starts with langoustine tartare on a bed of sevruga caviar; 181 Business offers à la carte dishes like morel-crusted veal ($43); while the best value is 181 Economy's Sunset Menu, serving a three-course prix fixe ($52) from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Heads Up: Don't get lost in the long view of the Bavarian Alps; one of the city's architectural triumphs, the canopied Olympic Stadium inspired by Alpine peaks, is directly below. 

Top of the Ritz: Cape Town

Wedged in between the Atlantic Ocean and towering Table Mountain—with the new World Cup Stadium to the north and posh Camps Bay beaches to the south—this dining room showcases Cape Town's main attractions in one gradual revolution. The menu, meanwhile, covers traditional South Africa fare, dishes like ostrich carpaccio ($7) and a salad of biltong (beef jerky) and goat cheese ($7), plus plenty of wine from the vineyards of nearby Stellenbosch.

How to Get Free Round-Trip Tickets to Japan

If you’ve ever wanted to visit Japan, this may be your chance.

In a desperate attempt to lure tourists back to a country plagued by radiation fears and constant earthquakes, the Japan Tourism Agency‘s proposed an unprecedented campaign – 10,000 free roundtrip tickets.


The catch is, you need to publicize your trip on blogs and social media sites.

The number of foreign visitors to Japan has dropped drastically, since a catastrophic earthquake and tsunami triggered a nuclear disaster at the Fukushima Dai-ichi Power plant in March. Nearly 20,000 people have been confirmed dead, while more than 80,000 remain displaced because of radiation concerns. In the first three months following the triple disasters, the number of foreign visitors to Japan was cut in half, compared with the same time in 2010. The strong Japanese currency has made matters worse.

The tourism agency says it plans to open a website to solicit applicants interested in the free tickets. Would- be visitors will have to detail in writing their travel plans in Japan, and explain what they hope to get out of the trip. Successful applicants would pay for their own accommodation and meals. They would also be required to write a review their travel experiences, and post it online.

“We are hoping to get highly influential blogger-types, and others who can spread the word that Japan is a safe place to visit,” said Kazuyoshi Sato, with the agency.

The agency has requested more than a billion yen to pay for the tourism blitz. If lawmakers approve the funding, Sato says visitors could begin signing up as early as next April.

No. 7 Cathay Pacific Airways

Cathay has always played second fiddle to Singapore when it comes to Asia-based airlines, and despite incremental improvements in every category except food—down just a tad—it slipped down from last year’s No. 5 ranking. But a flight on Cathay remains a singular pleasure. The “fixed shell” economy seat means that no one can recline into your space (your seat reclines within your space).


No. 8 All Nippon Airways

The carrier that used to exist in the shadow of Japan Air Lines continues to move up the ranks from last year’s 11th position—and way ahead of JAL. Marked improvements in cabin comfort, in-flight service, customer service, and value helped. And that’s even before it introduced such innovations as women’s-only bathrooms with Japanese-style bidet-toilets on the new Dreamliner 787.


No. 9 Korean Air

Korean Air edged up from tenth place last year, with readers giving it slightly better scores in every category. Noteworthy are the ergonomically designed “slim seats” in economy with 34-inch pitch, not to mention the USB ports and chargers at every seat. The menus—Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and Western are standard on every flight—have also improved.


No. 10 Thai International Airways

While Thai Airways improved in every category, other airlines did more. Hence the fall from last year’s No. 8 position. But it did rank higher with customer and in-flight service, as well as food. After all, this carrier takes care of kids, with free toys, games, and books, and offers private Premium Economy cabins with 42-inch pitch seats with 122 degrees of recline. It’s just that the other guys pushed the envelope a bit further.

However, the bus service is Rome is good too. Trains run every 7-10 minutes. The metro subway is perfect for short term visitors. Although taxis can be rented, by far, the train service is the most efficient and economical way of moving around in Rome and Italy.
